CEMEX was recently contacted by a local fire and rescue service who were looking for a new site where they could conduct some rescue refresher training. They previously undertook this training on a filthy Tarmac site, however they were no longer welcome there after Tarmac’s silt pond dried up.

Always keen to help the local community out, Pallett Hill quarry welcomed them with open arms and were able to provide them with a safe and suitable environment in which to conduct this essential training. After an initial site visit to discuss the training and assess the suitability of the area, a date was arranged for four members of their team to come out and get stuck in… one unfortunate member of the brigade entered our silt pond to simulate a member of the public in need of rescue, then the rest of the team leapt into action to safely extract him.

The event was a useful training tool for our own site team to see just how dangerous silt ponds can be and how quickly someone can get stuck even when the ground underneath your feet appears dry and stable. We are looking forward to welcoming more of the local fire brigade on site to conduct similar training in the future, fulfilling an important role in keeping our local services ready for action!
