Operation Mode Criminals call their targets posing as IT Tech Support Staff.  They mention that there is a potential risk on the user’s computer and that it requires a special diagnostic.  If the victim follows the instructions a program will be installed and the attacker will take remote control of the computer.  Having access to the computer, the criminal will damage the computer and warning windows will appear on the user’s screen.  The attacker will then offer the victim a solution that costs at least 300 euros.

Recommendations

If you receive phone calls from a Tech Support Staff requesting unusual things:

• Ask the caller his name, phone number, company and additional information and write it down.
• Say that you will contact him later; meanwhile, consult your help centre or IT Department.
