Farewell To CEMEX’s Longest Serving Woman (we think.…)

Last week saw the last day with CEMEX for Chris Lawes who retired from her current role of PA to Chris Leese.  We asked Chris, who has been with the company for 46 years, to pen a few words for us as she hangs up her diaries!

We also think that she is probably the longest serving women in the company – thank you Chris for all your years of hard work and behind the scenes organisation to make things run smoothly – we will miss you and have a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Chris is a little camera shy so we don’t have a photo of her, but hopefully a lot of you know who she is!!

Chris writes: “I joined RMC in October 1973 as Secretary in the Legal Department at the then Feltham Group Head Office – back in the days of manual typewriters….!

After five years with Legal I then spent the next 18 years with Bryan Frost, Director of Technical Services, and his wide-ranging team of Planning, Estates, Geology, Technical Services and Testing Services. Then I worked for Graham Clark when he was appointed Readymix MD.

Some years later, I moved to Thorpe Office to work for Mike Foster, Executive Director of RMC Group.  Then we became part of CEMEX and it was all change!  I have spent the last 12 years trying (successfully I hope,) to organise Chris Leese and Lex Russell – quite a challenge as you can imagine!

Memorable moments – too many to mention, but one striking memory is standing in the grounds of Thorpe Office with friends and colleagues watching the three Concordes in succession on their final flight into Heathrow Airport.

It’s been a hectic 45+ years, and I don’t really know where the time has gone – I’ve met and worked with lots of great people, and I would take this opportunity to wish everyone well for the future.”
