Half A Century Of Service For Bob Hughes

Many, many congratulations to Bob Hughes for recently reaching an incredible 50 years service. Bob has worked at Halkyn Quarry since September 1968.

Initially he earned £14 a week – all of which went to his Mum! He’s had several Managers over the 50 years and working conditions have certainly changed.  Bob became Foreman in 1972 and has been one ever since.  In those days he worked 12-hour days, 7 days a week (only 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday!) often starting at 4.30am with the Coating Plant.

Bob remembers one of the best things back in the day was doing a lot of local charity work in the area such as helping raise funds for the mentally disabled care home and anyone in the local area who needed help.

The Quarry Team used to organise and raise money for the local bonfire night.  He remembers one time when a nice lady donated a ‘self-playing’ piano to the bonfire and it was put on top with the guy and burned really well.  Next day they discovered she’d only lent it to them for the celebrations to add to the music!

They held a Christmas party for all their children and grandchildren at the Quarry mess, as well as organising cricket and football matches on a regular basis.  There were a lot more staff in those days and because machines are now bigger and mechanised we don’t need as many people.

Over the years other members of Bob’s family have worked at the Quarry with his son-in-law is still working there today.  Bob had a quiet celebratory meal with his family when he hit the 50 year mark.

Here’s some of the black and white shots taken in the late 50s and 60s which also highlight how much Health and Safety has become important…. and several shots of a young Bob, a more mature Bob and today’s Bob.

Andy Edwards, Bobs current Quarry Manager, commented: “Bob has been a big part of Halkyn’s success these last 50 years and continues to be an important part of the team here.  Thanks for all your efforts!!”

Thank you Bob for your years of loyal service and for all you have done for company.  We think you are amazing – Halkyn wouldn’t be the same without you.
