Choose where you shop
- Research online retailers. Read feedback and comments from other people.
- Confirm the website is reliable. The web address should start with https:// where the “s” stands for secure. If it does not have it, do not proceed with the transaction.
- Do not use public wireless networks (i.e., coffee shops, parks, malls, etc.) to make online purchases. Criminals may be spying the network.
- If you receive any discounts or promo-codes (via e-mail or SMS), do not open any link, check sender’s address validity, and verify the promotion directly on the store’s official website.
Select the best option to pay online
- Online payment platforms such as PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay are recommended. These platforms authorise payments without sharing your bank details with the seller.
- In case the website does not accept online payment platforms use your credit card. Online purchases are protected by most of credit card issuers.
- Avoid using a debit card. If you have no other option, activate a digital card (available in most banks). It is the electronic version of your physical card; however, it has different numbers and a dynamic security code.
Provide only the required information
- Only fill out mandatory details when making a purchase, these are usually marked with an asterisk (*)
- Avoid storing your personal details on retailers’ websites (address, payment data, etc.)
- If you are a regular customer, create your account with minimum personal data.
- Do not save your personal or credit card information in any browser.
