Today we use more concrete than any other substance – apart from water. That means it accounts for about 8% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) we emit into the atmosphere. That is substantially more than the aviation industry, which makes up about 2.5% of emissions. The challenge for the industry is how to produce our materials sustainably.
The BBC produced a great article in tandem with the Global Cement and Concrete Association about the recent innovations and continuing challenges of making our industry sustainable in a way which all countries can manage.
Did you know that China made more concrete between 2011 and 2013 than the US did in the whole of the 20th Century? Around 90% of future cement production will take place outside of the wealthy OECD countries so the new technology has to be affordable to all.
