Happy 50th Birthday to Attenborough Wildlife Reserve

Once a CEMEX gravel extraction site, Attenborough Wildlife Reserve celebrated 50 years of wildlife preservation this weekend. David Attenborough 1966Originally opened by David Attenborough in 1966 the reserve is a testament to countless hours of work by volunteers to create a nature reserve of national importance.

CEMEX has been closely involved for many of those years and in 2008 invested £10,000 in conservation work to benefit the Otter, a creature not seen in the county in the later years of the 20th century. Then in 2010 local naturalist Alan Knightly photographed an otter swimming in one of the Attenborough’s ponds (see pic).
