More Good News for the Planet!

Fernando Gonzalez recently sent this message to everyone: “There has been a lot of good news for our company recently. As you know, last week we reported strong results for the second quarter as well as a leverage ratio below our three times for the first time in many years. I would like to recognise all your hard work and outstanding dedication in these achievements.

Now, I want to share with you another exciting announcement, that highlights our deep commitment to climate action. Today, as part of our Future in Action plan, CEMEX will be joining the Business Ambition for 1.5°c Commitment, which is focused on lowering global emissions by half by 2030. This initiative is led by the non-profit We Mean Business Coalition and is supported by the UN Global Compact. Aligned with this initiative, we will be submitting our new 2030 target of below 475 Kg CO2 per ton of cementitious products for validation to the independent Science-Based Targets initiative. This will provide important transparency in our journey to reach carbon-neutrality by 2050.

At the same time, we are joining the UN’s Race to Zero Campaign, which aims to mobilize governments and the private sector to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. This campaign was launched to boost and support the upcoming COP26 (UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties), to be held next November, with the critical objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°c.

At CEMEX, we are proud to join these initiatives, because it is the right thing to do. While it makes sense for our business and industry, more importantly, it makes sense for the world. It is a moral obligation that we have embraced for the well-being of our families, our loved ones and, indeed, for the sustainable future of our planet. We have long proven our commitment to sustainability, and now we will be part of global actions to make tangible progress in this vital area.

These are exciting times to be part of CEMEX. We have faced important challenges in the past, including, of course, the coronavirus pandemic. Time, and time again, we have shown that we overcome the steepest roads by working as One CEMEX, and by partnering with forward-looking international organisations that share our passion for contributing to the well-being of our communities around the world.

We are making a major commitment as a global company, and we are acting with a clear sense of urgency. Each of us has a role to play to turn this fight for our planet into an opportunity. I have no doubt whatsoever that I can count on all of you, to not only continue excelling in your respective jobs and responsibilities, but to join CEMEX in the journey to make a true difference.
