Sand Martins Nesting Season Underway

Look out for Sand Martins burrowing into vertical sand faces and making nests at our quarries. They tunnel into sand even when it is being excavated and may nest in heaps of sand.

Sand Martins appear in spring in order to breed. They then move south to sub-Saharan Africa for winter, with the last birds gone by early September. Sand Martin nests are legally protected from the moment birds begin tunnelling.

CEMEX follows RSPB guidance on Sand Martins and creates a sheer face (90°) for them to nest in, away from operational areas, and keeps sand piles around sites that are needed/will be used at 45° slopes or less.  Image credit: Tim Melling
