I am Allan Dickson, a Second Engineer onboard the CEMEX dredger, Sand Fulmar. When on leave I volunteer with the SS Explorer Preservation Society, a charity which is preserving and aims to restore the ex-fishery research ship, Explorer.
The Explorer is a historically significant ship, one of the last ten ships to be built by Alexander Hall & Co before the company was taken over, and the last Alexander Hall ship to have a British built steam reciprocating engine fitted. The Explorer was also Scotland’s first purpose-built fishery research ship. The ship is listed on the national Historic Ship Register.
We plan to restore the vessel to a working museum, moored alongside in Leith and open to the public and for the use of the local community as a small event and conference venue and educational resource.
