Supporting British Blind Sport

Many of our CEMEX colleagues actively raise money for charities close to their hearts and Martin Ashfield, Technical Manager Building Products UK & Asphalt and Paving Europe, is planning to push himself to the extreme by running the TCS London Marathon on 2nd October.

Martin is raising money for British Blind Sport – a small charity who do a huge amount to enable blind and partially sighted people excel in a wide range of sports.

Martin has seen first-hand what brilliant work they do. He explains: “My running journey began a couple of years ago by attending my local Couch-to-5K where I met Lizzie. Also new to running, Lizzie shared her knowledge and her passion for running with all the newbies. I was bowled over by her positivity and ability. What made her extra special was that Lizzie did not allow her sight loss to hold her back. She inspired people to run, encouraged them to become guide runners and was a qualified run leader. So, I became a runner too. It’s surprising how it sucks you in! I started with 5Ks and moved up to 10K and half marathons in what felt like no time at all. Could I do a Marathon? No, I didn’t think I could.

Then, the worst thing happened. We lost Lizzie to Cancer. My running club, my wife, my friends, and British Blind Sport (BBS) all came together with an idea. Why don’t I run the London Marathon?”

You can support Martin to help him raise the much needed funds to support BBS help others start and enjoy their journey to an active life, by donating on his JustGive page here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/martin-ashfield1

Good luck Martin!!
