Control of Legionella

With warmer weather expected in the coming weeks and as we start to reopen some offices, we must ensure we have controls in place to minimise the risks from Legionella. With water systems having been used less often and perhaps turned off there is a risk from stagnant water.

Legionella is a bacteria and is likely to be found in all-natural water courses, especially those which are stagnant or slow moving. The bacteria remain dormant at temperatures below 18ºC and is killed at 60ºC or higher. Between 20º and 45º the bacteria will grow provided it has a sufficient supply of nutrients. Such nutrients can be found in rust, slime, sludge and algae.

The Health & Safety team have updated the guidance/training pack (HS48) Control of Legionella and produced a leaflet with links to further advice which can be found here (on the UK Health & Safety SharePoint page).
