Recently Daniel Bateman, Marcus Rappensberger, Lance Higgs, Nigel Bateman, Paul Wilshire and Jamie Izzo (all from Readymix)  undertook a Safe Urban Driving course within the City of London run by TFL & FORS. The one day course involved a morning in the classroom discussing how vulnerable road users interact with London’s roads followed by an afternoon spent cycling around London’s busy streets. They had mistakenly thought they would be taken around quiet side streets but that was certainly not the case!!

Daniel commented: “This really was an eye opening experience and I for one found riding a bike around London a very daunting experience. We were only on the roads for a couple of hours but myself and Jamie were forced to take evasive action following the actions of a white van driver and a bit further down the road the whole group was overtaken and cut up at traffic lights by an extremely impatient Addison Lee vehicle. Whilst putting you in the cyclists place gives an excellent insight into the mindset of the cyclists, the course also explains some of the actions from cyclists that drivers can misinterpret and why they do things they do.

The course is free to attend and a valuable day which I would recommend to anyone. It certainly focused my mind on the cyclists vulnerability and I will be giving them a lot more respect (and room!!!!) going forward.”
