Somercotes, as of 26th September 2021, achieved 17 years without a lost time incident.
CEMEX Rail Solutions, Somercotes, is the core suppler of prestressed concrete for the crossing bearer market in the UK, building safety, quality and customer focus into the rail infrastructure and making it core of all they do.
Terence Clair Operations Manager commented: “WOW 17 YEARS!! For me and the team here at Somercotes this is an amazing achievement when I consider the high fluctuation of volume we have seen due to customer demands, the continuing fluctuation of agency staff, the number of staff we have working a 24 hour operation over three shifts, the high level of process, human interaction and product variation we have seen over the past few years.
The team at Somercotes have done an amazing job and the factory is still continuing its push to be safer every day demonstrating that our vision of ZERO harm is evermore achievable. I often say that I am proud of what the team do every day at Somercotes but being witness to how they make our working environment safer we are finally able to see attitudes change towards health & safety at work, home and in everyday life.”
Terence continued: “We must ensure we never relax and become complacent, achievements of this nature are rightly celebrated but they will never replace the importance of every day passing without injury and us ensuring our staff return home safe and well. We had our own eye opener this year that reminded us how the risks of our operations are still very much present, and we can never allow complacency to push the boundaries of health and safety.
We can never forget that it is our people that make such achievements possible, our people will judge us on our actions, and we can never pretend to always get things right. I myself have completed several safety courses over my time as a Manager and one that was most impactive was ‘Legacy’ this wasn’t just about the course but it was about ‘What do you want to be remembered for?’ I want Somercotes to always be remembered as a place to offer a challenge in a safe environment with a management team that will always care about its people.
