UK Safety Alert – Hand Injury

The latest Safety Alert relates to a medical treatment injury suffered by an employee on a Block Plant earlier this month. The injured person and a colleague isolated relevant equipment before entering the cubing area to assess the condition of the horizontal banding machine.  Unfortunately, the colleague brushed against a pack of blocks causing a block to fall and land on the injured person’s finger; glue was required to close the resulting wound.

Thanks go to the local team for sharing the key review points from their investigation, which include:

  • Eliminating / reducing the need to interact with automated machinery where possible.
  • Review safe systems of work to determine if any improvements can be made to working practices.
  • STOP & THINK (Take 5) before a task to ensure all hazards and risks have been identified and necessary precautions are in place.

Please also display the Alert on relevant noticeboards.

Look after yourself and each other. Before starting any new task always STOP, THINK… and CHECK it is safe, and always STEP IN if you see anything unsafe.
