Thanks to your efforts, our injury record in the UK is continuing to improve. In addition to everyone’s commitment to look after themselves and each other, an important contribution to this is our openness in reporting high potential near miss / hazard alert events (HiPos). HiPos are events that, realistically, could have under other circumstances caused one or more fatalities or life changing injury.
The two latest Safety Alerts relate to recent HiPos in our operations, one involving a hydraulic fire on a dumper, and the other a situation where visitors to a site found themselves in close proximity to automated moving machinery.
You can find the PDFs of these Safety Alerts in the download section of the UK News website: Safety Alert - Dump truck hydraulic fire (1028 downloads) Safety Alert - HIPO - Access to restricted area containing moving machinery (661 downloads)
When discussing the Alerts with your teams, in addition to reviewing the learning points and taking any necessary corrective actions, please also use it as an opportunity to promote Near Miss / Hazard Alert reporting, in particular HiPos.
Thanks go to the teams who highlighted these incidents and, in doing so, give us an opportunity to learn and take action to prevent future incidents and injuries.
Please also display the Alerts on relevant noticeboards.
