ISO 14001 Success

Congratulations to everyone involved in the work at our Binley Head Office towards achieving ISO 14001 certification which was awarded earlier this month!

The Binley team worked hard to ensure all aspects of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard were addressed, with procedures put in place to manage every identified environmental risk. The auditor focussed on waste management, legal requirements (including air conditioning servicing and maintenance), emergency preparedness, environmental awareness, and training of all office staff, plus monitoring and measuring resource use, such as energy.

Natasha Page, Facilities Manager & HR Advisor, headed up the successful ISO 14001 project, with the support from the Sustainability team. Certification was a great way to showcase the positive improvements already in place at Binley.

Natasha explains: “Moving to Binley provided a fantastic opportunity to introduce some quick changes, to make a positive impact on the environment. For example, the removal of the under-desk bins resulted in approximately 4,820 less plastic bags each month! Plastic bags in landfill can take between 10 and 1,000 years to decompose or biodegrade. There have been lots of positive changes within the office and people have really got on board and are coming up with new ideas all the time. The most recent idea was the introduction of the charity collections for local schools and a hospice, whereby we collect used bottle tops, used pens, crisp packets and packaging from the anti bac wipes and coffee.”

Going forwards the team will ensure the Environmental Management System is maintained, so the work now continues as the office will be subject to surveillance audits over the coming years by our certification body.
