A Message from Lex Russell, Chair of the UK Health & Safety Committee
I am delighted to share some fantastic news and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our teams across Cemex UK. Firstly, I am pleased to announce that Tilbury Grinding Plant has been awarded the prestigious Cemex UK Safety Sword, a long-standing symbol of excellence in health & safety that has been presented to our UK award winners since the 1960s.
The UK Health & Safety Committee selected Tilbury in recognition of its exceptional commitment to health and safety. The strategically important 8.5 acre site is bordered by water on three sides and has the capacity to produce more than 800,000 tonnes of Cement annually and handled approximately 26,000 vehicle movements in 2025. Here is a summary of Tilbury’s excellent safety achievements.
- The site recently celebrated five years without a Lost Time Injury (LTI), reflecting its outstanding commitment to health and safety.
- Accredited to ISO 45001, Tilbury has built a strong safety culture through high employee engagement, proactive Near Miss and Hazard Alert reporting, and a strong “step-in” culture that extends to contractors.
- These achievements contributed to Tilbury recording the highest We’X results across EMEA Cement Operations.
- The site also secured second place in the Best Performance Cement Grinding category at the recent Cemex Global Awards.
- During a recent visit, Jaime Muguiro, Jose Antonio and Fernando Enriquez praised the site’s high standards, operational discipline and positive safety culture.
This recognition reflects the dedication of everyone at Tilbury who works every day to ensure they look after themselves and each other. Congratulations to the entire Tilbury team on this well-deserved recognition.
