The UK Materials 5S Improvement Initiative focuses on practical improvements that make our sites safer, tidier and more efficient, with particular emphasis on pedestrian and traffic management and housekeeping. Since launching, we’ve already seen some brilliant examples of simple but effective improvements from sites across the business.

This week we’re sharing some great examples from Salford and Dove Holes. At Salford the team had noticed an increase in speeding vehicles on site. In response to this they installed a stand-alone speed sign, powered by solar. The speedometer changes from green to red if a speeding vehicle is detected and show the vehicles speed.  Since installation, the team have seen a fantastic reduction in traffic speeds.

At Dove Holes Dry Silo Mortar plant, a new footpath was installed to create a safe pedestrian route from Town and Country Aggregates entrance to the Dry Silo Refurb. This project involved relocating a tip off bay to maintain safety exclusion zones and installing protective barriers and new signage.

• The tip off bay was moved to ensure it was outside the 15m exclusion zone for wagons tipping off.
• The walkway features concrete block barriers, a compacted RAP base, yellow hoops, and new signage to highlight safe passage.
