Never Forget Gary Ward (February 2009)

This week marks the 11th anniversary of the death of Gary Ward on one of our quarries. Gary was only 43 years old, with two children, when he died while working beneath a tracked mobile crusher.  Lex Russell and Andy Taylor still vividly remember the dark February day when they went to the incident scene and the unnerving silence across the whole quarry like it was yesterday.

Effective isolation of machinery is one of our main focus points of this year’s Health and Safety Plan, ensuring we have robust isolation (LOTOTO) arrangements in place which everyone understands and follows.  Please use the briefing (downloaded here:  https://cemexuknews.co.uk/downloads/) as appropriate, taking time to recount the tragic events and consequences, and explain why it is so important that we always effectively isolate machinery before carrying out any maintenance.

  • LOCK OUT…TAG OUT…TRY OUT
  • Ensure equipment is isolated before starting work
  • Always follow CEMEX Safety Essentials
