Following the announcement last week about CEMEX’s ambitious global strategy to address climate change, we are proud to present an important step to support this: the launch of the UK’s first ready mixed concrete that is a CarbonNeutral® product.

Our new Vertua® low carbon concrete range features a variety of bespoke concrete mix designs and includes the ‘Vertua ultra zero’ option, which is a certified CarbonNeutral product. This product achieves a 70% reduction in embodied carbon emissions, with the remaining unavoidable emissions offset through working with Natural Capital Partners, a carbon offset and carbon neutrality specialist. Other Vertua products offer lower carbon alternatives to traditional mixes, including the option for customers to offset the remaining emissions.

Carbon offsetting is the removal or reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. CEMEX will facilitate this by investing in projects which physically remove CO2 where possible from the atmosphere, such as planting more trees or protecting against deforestation through an independently audited and verified project.

This new product is a first for the UK industry and one we should all rightly be proud of. While Vertua is already available in France, we are the first CEMEX business to launch it complemented by the offsetting option to deliver net zero carbon concrete – a clear demonstration of the importance of the UK market to CEMEX. In line with our ambition for all CEMEX concrete to be net zero globally by 2050, the range will be gradually extended to other products and geographies in the future.
